On Friday, Stanley 'Goose' Stewart weighed in on everything from the twists and turns of that fateful day...to the man he called clindamycin boss, Don Blankenship.  "Every night, when I would go underground, I would look out at the skyline until it was out of sight. Because I knew this might be the last time I would see it. That's how volatile that mine was," said Stewart.  Stewart said he felt so much fear that one evening in July of 2009, he came home and never went to bed. "My wife said, what's wrong? I said nothing. She said I can tell something is bothering you. I said if anything ever happens to me, you give them hell because that place is a ticking time bomb."  It would be nine more months before his worst nightmare came true.  "I felt a slight breeze like the leading edge of a thunderstorm. It picked up tremendously to the point that I couldn't see it. I thought this is big.  According to a state, federal, and independent investigation, a high level of methane gas combined with explosive levels of coal dust had caused an explosion. Twenty-nine miners were killed.
Stewart, who had only descended 300 feet at the time, jumped off the man trip and ran to safety. "A younger miner said to me, what do you think happened? I said the place exploded." Four and a half years later, Stewart said he has yet to receive a phone call from Don Blankenship, the man he called boss for 15 years. He's calling Thursday night's indictment one step closer to justice. "He was god-like. He felt everyone should bow to him and if you didn't,  you had a bad day." As Blankenship heads to trial, Stewart only hopes his former boss will be treated with the same respect he gave his workers. "I said to my wife, keep up hope...one should always have hope. But from what I knew, those boys never had a chance."
